Marketing... Do I Really Need It?

Having been in the marketing and advertising industry since 1993 and working with hundreds if not thousands of different businesses in this time, it has never ceased to amaze me how many small to medium sized businesses think they don't need it.  I'm sure there is a strong correlation between those who felt this way and the number of failed businesses and business closures each year. A business owners main objective should not be to create themselves a job where they become a slave to their business, just grinding it out everyday barely getting by, but to build themselves a long term sustainable business that they are able to sell when they are ready for retirement or pass along to family.  In order to do this one should have long term plans in place to build a good business with the proper image to the public to whether the ups and downs of the economy.  Consumers are very savvy these days and competition for their dollars can be atrocious. Another misconception people share is that marketing and advertising is one in the same.  This could not be farther from the truth!  Perhaps years and years ago this held some validity supported  even by definition but even that is changing more and more as dictionaries are being updated and rewritten.  The current definition of both are very different.  This changing of definition alone points to the need of understanding or hiring someone who understands marketing and advertising.

Marketing vs. Advertising

Let's start by defining both terms... Advertising is defined by dictionary.com as 1. the act or practice of calling public attention to one's product, service, need, etc., especially by paid announcements in newspapers and magazines, over radio or television, on billboards, etc.: to get more customers by advertising. "The activity or profession of producing advertisements for commercial products or services."  (2005 Oxford English Dictionary) Advertisement is defined as: "A notice or announcement in a public medium promoting a product, service or event, or publicizing a job vacancy." (2005 Oxford English Dictionary) Marketing is defined by dictionary.com as 1.  the act of buying or selling in a market. 2.  the total of activities involved in the transfer of goods from the producer or seller to the consumer or buyer, including advertising, shipping, storing, and selling.   "The action or business of promoting and selling products and services, including market research and advertising".  (2005 Oxford English Dictionary)   In short you can look at advertising as an event.   Advertising (when properly executed) is the statistically driven and measurable part of a marketing strategy, via carefully selected communication methods, targeted at predetermined audiences.  Marketing on the other hand must be looked at as all encompassing.  Advertising is a very small part of marketing, but marketing begins way before with your philosophy, mission and branding.  When you decide to open shop for business whether you know it or not you set out marketing.  Your philosophy about business, employees and customers all began your marketing plan.

Build Your Business for the Long Term... Don't Create Yourself a Job!

In order to build a long-term business one should have a clear and concise marketing plan.  Ever increasing advertising venues can easily create a hodge-podge where ones throwing good money after bad.  While advertising is necessary there are many ways one can be losing money without even realizing they are doing so. With clear goals we can help you develop a marketing plan for your business.  One of the first things I suggest to most business owners is to identify their target market.  This is absolutely a must in today's business climate because competition is fierce and with a little thinking outside the box your business could stand head and shoulders above the competition.
